Holy Mass Intentions
TO HELP THE HOLY SOULS IS A GREAT ACT OF CHARITY
Saint Francis de Sales said that “To assist the souls in Purgatory is to perform the most excellent works of mercy, or rather it is to practice in a mostsublime manner all the works of mercy together: it is to feed the hungry, to ransom prisoners, to clothe the naked, to procure for poor exiles the hospitality of the heavenly Jerusalem; it is to comfort the afflicted, to instruct the ignorant; in fine it is to practice all works of mercy in one.” This doctrine agrees very well with that of Saint Thomas Aquinas, who says in his “Summa”: Helping the dead is more agreeable to God than helping the living; because the former stand in more urgent need of it, not being able to assist themselves, as are the living.
PURGATORY
On this subject the Catholic Church proposes two truths clearly defined as dogma of faith: first, that there is a Purgatory; second,
that the souls which are in Purgatory may be assisted by the sufferings of the faithful, especially by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Holy Scripture says: “It is a Holy and wholesome thought, to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.”
(Mac. 12:39 – 46)
